Centre for water and sanitation (CWS)

This centre was set up in 2010 with the aim of conducting training programmes on water and Sanitation to Rural Development and Panchayat Raj functionaries and Elected Representatives.

The central importance of Water, Sanitation and hygiene to development has been well recognized in recent decades the world over. It’s defining role in Health, Education, Gender equality, Environmental sustainability, Growth and employment cannot be over emphasized. No wonder, WASH is the subject of dedicated targets within the sustainable developmental Goal 6. The UN General Assembly has recognized access to safe water and sanitation as ‘human rights’. But fulfillment of these rights requires proper systems, well equipped institutions capable of effectively delivering WASH services and bringing about the desired behavior changes in Services Providers as well as users.

In recognition thereof and based on the principle of subsidiarity as applied to local governance, constitution of India through the 73rd amendment has included Water and Sanitation among the 29 subjects devolved to PRIs.

Against this backdrop the centre was established with the objectives of Promoting Capacity development amongst stakeholders especially in the PRI systems and CBOs. Take up studies aimed at strengthening WASH systems through social mobilization and advocacy. Supporting the endeavors, of the State Water and Sanitation Mission.

OBJECTIVES

  • Promoting Capacity development amongst stakeholders especially in the PRI systems and CBOs through training programmes and other related activities.
  • Supporting the endeavors, of the State Water and Sanitation Mission.

Training Activity

The centre takes up training / orientation programmes inter alia, in the following areas

  • Planning monitoring and implementing Rural Water Supply Systems including Operation and Maintenance
  • Water Quality Monitoring
  • Water grid systems- Mission Bhagiratha
  • Rural Sanitation with Special reference to ODF and ODF +
  • Solid & Liquid Waste Management
  • Hygiene (including menstrual & Community Hygiene)
